JPG to PNG Converter

If you have a photo saved as a JPG, why would you ever want to turn it into a PNG? Mostly, it comes down to editing and graphic design.

Unlike JPGs, which squish and throw away data every single time you save them, PNGs are a 'lossless' format. If you plan on opening an image multiple times to add text, draw on it, or create a meme, converting it to a PNG first ensures you won't slowly degrade the photo quality.

There's a big misconception about image formats. A lot of people believe that if they turn a JPG into a PNG, the background will magically disappear.

While it's true that PNGs support transparent backgrounds and JPGs do not, simply running the file through a converter will not cut out the background for you. It will just save your existing solid image as a pristine, uncompressed PNG file ready for heavy editing in Photoshop or Canva.

PNG is lossless, so once an image is saved as PNG, repeated editing does not degrade it further. It is the usual choice for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp text or flat colours. Converting a JPG will not restore detail that JPG compression already removed, but it stops further loss.

A photo saved as PNG is often much larger than the JPG it came from. If your goal is a small file for the web, use JPG to WebP or compress with the Image Compressor instead. To go back, use PNG to JPG. If you need transparency, the converted image still has a solid background, because JPG never stored transparency.
