It can be confusing looking at the massive list of barcode standards. If you are selling a product in a major retail store in the US or Canada, you must use a globally registered UPC-A barcode.

Retail products in India and worldwide mostly use EAN-13 (13 digits, the last being a check digit) and UPC-A (12 digits). For internal stock, tickets and asset tags, Code 128 is flexible and can hold letters and numbers. Pick the format your scanner or marketplace requires before you print.

Note that a generator only draws the barcode for the number you enter. Numbers for products sold in shops or on marketplaces come from GS1, so do not invent retail numbers that could clash with real products.

Keep strong contrast, usually black bars on a white background, and leave blank space (the quiet zone) on both sides.
